Importance of the neonatal period
Starting life with a healthy breathing is considered as the first step of a healthy life. Unfortunately, not every baby has this chance. Some neonates carry perinatal risks due to various reasons. Such babies can survive, only if they have access to special / critical care. Particularly, neonatal period has great importance in this regards.

The first 28 days of a baby’s life is regarded as “neonatal” period.  The problems that may arise in this period have a substantial role in infant mortality. According to statistics, more than half of child deaths are neonate deaths in Turkey. Therefore, pregnancies with prematurity risk must be followed up at hospitals with a neonatal intensive care unit.

Türkiye Hospital constitutes a safe and secure delivery environment for both mother and baby with this unit along with being a fully and advanced technologically equipped health institution.

Function of the Neonate Intensive Care Unit
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has a life saving characteristic. Therefore, babies take care at this unit, if there is any life-threatening risk. Such risks include babies with low birth weight, premature neonates and babies with hereditary health conditions.  Intensive Care Unit has an important function in survival of the babies, who will be under high risk of death under normal conditions.

According to statistics, one out of ten pregnancies is resulting in preterm birth. Gestation period for natural delivery is considered as 40 weeks. Deliveries at the 37 or 38 weeks of gestation are considered as preterm births. It is widely accepted that the baby should stay in the womb of the mother for minimum 38 weeks in order to ensure maturity of all organs.

In general, severe complications may arise in babies born before 37 weeks of gestation, because their respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems, and other organs are not mature enough.  These babies may be required to stay at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where they are monitored for 24 hours and provided life support.

Care in incubators
Incubators are considered the main element of neonatal intensive care units.  Neonates are provided healthcare in such incubators. Incubators create an environment similar to mother’s womb. Babies are heated and protected from infections, similar to the environment in mother’s womb. The babies with premature lung will have survival chance, since they are ventilated using state-of-the-art medical devices, which assist ventilation of the baby

Vital functions, such as respiratory rate, heart rate, and body temperatures, are monitored for 24 hours a day in incubators.

Mothers with complicated delivery can frequently visit their babies and help their nutrition at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, should mothers wear appropriate clothing. Mothers enter intensive care unit with appropriate clothing. Mothers’ support has positive influence on development of babies in the intensive care period.

Our basic philosophy “Patient Satisfaction”
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Türkiye Hospital has abilities of 24-hour monitoring, mobile x ray, and ultrasound as well as consultation support from other departments such as periodic neurology, cardiology, hematology, and pediatric surgery.
