Born in Ankara in 1975, Dr Muftuoglu has graduated from Ankara Atatürk Anadolu High School in 1993, and from Ankara University Medical School in 1999. He completed his residency in Ankara University Vehbi Koç Eye Hospital in 2003. He completed cataract refractive surgery training at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston in 2003, Vitreoretinal surgery at Duke University in 2006, Advanced refractive surgery at Instituto Oftalmologico Alicante in 2007, Cataract-Cornea Refractive clinical fellowship with USMLE Texas Medical License at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center between 2007 and 2009. He became an associate professor in january 2009, and professor in april 2015. His interests include complicated cataract surgery, advanced refractive surgery, keratoconus-corneal disease and surgery, combined glaucoma and artificial cornea surgery, and vitreoretinal surgery. He has been working at Koç University Medical School as a staff ophthalmologist and ophthalmic surgeon since October 2016.
