In the Neurology Unit of our hospital; headaches, epilepsy, dizziness, brain vascular diseases, muscle diseases, movement disorders and dementia, nervous system disease and stroke diagnosis and treatment are performed. Our EEG and EMG laboratories are operated in order to support diagnosis and follow-up. Our Intensive Care provides service to neurological patients, who need all kinds of intensive care such as epileptic status, stroke.

Department of Neurology provides service with all polyclinic, emergency room and intensive care units for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment in all kinds of brain and nervous system diseases.

As well as diagnosis and short-term treatment services, long-term treatment of multidisciplinary understanding chronic neurological disorders is also provided by our hospital.

Electroencephalography (EEG)

It is a method of diagnosis, which is used in detection of the source area and follow-up of abnormal electrical activities in health problems suspected that it affects the brain.

Brain electrical waves are recorded in the computer by attaching on about the 23 electrodes (round cut, precision sensor) skin of head (hairy area) area in EEG. Many functional brain disorders (epilepsy, etc.) of brain can be detected by comparing recording results with normal expected wave frequency and size. EEG alone is not enough to make the diagnosis, other tests may be necessary as well.

Pain, pain improvement is not expected in patient because electrical current is not given to the patient during EEG. There is no radiation exposure with EEG and brain is not damaged. Patient sits during application or is in the lying position and is awake. EEG may be applied in all age groups of patients (infants, the elderly, women, men).

Standard EEG time is average 20-30 minutes and all night EEG may be carried out in the way that it will include also sleep.

EEG; is used in health problems such as epilepsy, loss of consciousness, state of unconsciousness, inflammatory diseases of the brain, sleep and behavior disorders (mental retardation, tics, eating disorders, schizophrenia, mood disorders) and uncertain headaches and in the monitoring of functions of all intensive care patients.

Detection of abnormal electrical activity forming in the brain is carried out with our full- fledged EEG devices and specialist physicians in our hospital.

Electromyography (EMG)

It is a method of examination applied for research whether health problems in the muscle, which is considered as problematic, are originated from a disease caused by muscle or are originated from effects of nerve system on the muscle.

EMG is used in the monitoring of contradiction activities electrically of muscles and warning conduction velocity in the nerves related with muscle.

  • 1. Monitoring of alert conduction velocity in the nerves related with muscle: Alert conduction velocity of nerves are monitored by applying electrical current in lower intensity to the skin areas in the way that it will not disturb the patient. Electrical activities are recorded via device.
  • 2. Monitoring of electrically contradiction activities of muscles: Needle electrode is used in the examination of health problem originated from electrical activity of muscle. The tip of the needle is placed directly into the muscle, which is the source of the problem; electricity is not supplied to the patient through the needle, impression of needle is benefited for follow-up and recording of muscle activities. Electrical activities send from the brain to the area of needle will appear and are made audible. EMG may vary by region to which EMG application time will be applied, generally range from 30 min. to 2 hours. In the Needle EMG, it is not expected that the patient will feel pain until the medicated needle injection.

EMG is used in peripheral nerves (nerves out the brain spread out the farthest regions of the body) and in the diagnosis of muscle disease; does not carry diagnosis value for brain diseases- in diagnosis of diseases of muscular-nervous system diseases such as injuries caused by cervical discal hernia, facial paralysis, nerve compression, birth or trauma (accidents, etc.). Other tests in addition to EMG put a full diagnosis can be made.

EMG examination; is performed by using the latest electronical devices and computers by neurologists specialized in the electrophysiological studies, clinical neurophysiology (nervous system functioning) and neuromuscular (nerve-muscle) diseases.
